Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon
Wooden barrels have been used for storing liquids since around 2690 B.C. When the ancient Egyptians transitioned from clay jars to wooden casks, they found many benefits. Wooden barrels were stronger than clay and easier to move, thanks to their shape that allowed rolling. Yet, settlers along the Nile found that barrels made from staves were porous. Liquids stored inside slowly evaporated as the wood “breathed.”
As whiskey ages, it evaporates through the wood’s pores. On average, about 2% of the liquid in the barrel is lost yearly. This loss is called the angel’s share. In the U.S., laws require bourbon to contain at least 51% corn and to be aged in new, charred oak barrels. If bourbon meets these rules and ages at least two years, it qualifies as straight bourbon.
Each bottle of Rock Hill Farms Bourbon is aged roughly eight years in a single, new, charred American oak cask. It is bottled at 100 proof, known as bottled in bond. Made from a mash of corn, malted barley, and more rye than usual, this bourbon offers a spicy kick. It also has flavors of toasted nuts, fruit, chocolate, and marshmallow. The finish is smooth and sweet, lingering on the palate.
This bourbon is named after the fertile farmland along the Kentucky River, near where it is made in Frankfurt. Washingtonian Magazine called it “The World’s Greatest Bourbon.” Jim Murray scored it 95 points in Whisky Magazine, and Wine Enthusiast rated it between 96 and 100 points.
