pappy van winkle’s family reserve 20year 90.4 proof
Pappy Van Winkle 20 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey holds the top spot worldwide, earning a 99 out of 100 rating from the World Spirits Championship. This bourbon ages for two decades and is bottled at 90.4 proof, offering a smooth and rich experience. Named after a legendary figure, Pappy Van Winkle’s bourbon is full of personality and stands out as a true craft.
The 20 Year Bourbon offers an intense, yet inviting taste. It’s smooth with a bright citrus zest, complemented by sherry hints, dried fruits, and vanilla. The finish lasts long and exudes elegance, consistent with the reputation of Pappy Van Winkle.
When poured, the bourbon displays a deep amber hue with hints of orange. Its full-bodied profile evokes impressions of oiled leather, smoky notes, minerals, coffee, and cigar boxes. The aroma flood is rich and complex, with a finish that feels endless.
W.L. Weller & Sons started Pappy Van Winkle’s story. He began as a traveling sales rep and later became President of Stitzel-Weller Distillery. During and after Prohibition, he shaped the industry with his dedication. His efforts in the warehouse, office, and on the road built a reputation for craftsmanship and quality.
After his son Julian Jr. took the helm in 1964, the family sold the distillery in 1972. Julian Jr. then started J.P. Van Winkle and Son, focusing on marketing bourbons and creating special decanters. He kept bottling on the side, building the Old Rip Van Winkle label as a backup for his son’s future.
Julian III took control in 1981, at age 32. With four children and a wife, he faced a bourbon market in decline. Inspired by his father’s early work, he bought the Old Hoffman Distillery in Kentucky. Though advertising was limited, the quality of Old Rip Van Winkle spoke for itself. His refined palate and passion made the bourbon stand out.
When Buffalo Trace approached Julian III, he was hesitant. He already had mature stock but was wary of future supplies. In 1999, Buffalo Trace acquired the W.L. Weller label. They shared a similar recipe to Pappy’s. The switch was straightforward. By 2002, Buffalo Trace produced Van Winkle bourbons matching Pappy’s original recipe. This move ensures high standards while increasing future production.
